Sew Your Own Undies! An eco-friendly sewing kit
If you’ve followed me for a while, you may already be aware of my Sew Your Own Undies kits. I designed these sewing kits to use up secondhand, remnant, roll end and deadstock jersey fabric and to create a useful product for the sustainable sewist.
I had bought a job lot of vintage jersey samples that had been languishing in a shipping container in Glasgow since the 1990s. After sorting through and listing the rolls for sale by the half metre, I realised I had a lot of remnant fabric left. These shorter cuts of jersey weren’t worth the time and work involved in photographing, measuring, inventorying and listing them and so the idea of the Sew Your Own Undies kits was born.
Initially I offered the kits with just the jersey fabric and fold over elastic. Once I found Gutermann 100% recycled polyester thread (made from recycled water bottles), it made perfect sense to offer a spool of matching or coordinating thread.
I’ve made my own undies using these kits for several years now so I can attest to how useful it is to have everything you need in one place! I’ve made the Sophie Hines Median Knickers from this kit and the So Zo Undies pattern. I like a mix of high and low rise undies, depending on my outfit and activities for the day.
Zoe has kindly collaborated with me to allow me to now offer a kit that includes pattern pieces for her low rise knickers. There is a QR code linking to the instruction manual, to limit paper use. I’m really happy with this final version of the Sew Your Own Undies kit, it really does come with everything you need to make eco-friendly underwear!
